The population of the world continues to increase. It's no secret. We are expected to reach 9.7billion people in 2050. This is more than two billion more than today.1 But the agricultural land of the world isn't growing as fast as we do. This presents a number of serious issues for farmers who must produce enough food of high-quality to feed Canadians and people around the globe.

Farmers aren't able meet this growing demand by themselves. Modern tools and technology including herbicides such Glyphosate allow farmers to tackle weeds effectively and efficiently, leading to an increased sustainable and secure supply of food.

What is glyphosate exactly?

Glyphosate is an adaptable herbicide that is non-selective and is used by land managers, farmers and gardeners around the world for more than 40 years. It does this by blocking an enzyme which plants--in this instance, weeds that are not wanted to develop. These enzymes don't exist in humans or other animals.4 So, glyphosate poses no risk to any of them if it is applied correctly.

Regulators make sure that farmers are using approved herbicides in a responsible and appropriate manner. It is the responsibility of producers and farmers to ensure that there aren't adverse effects on the environment, animals, and human beings.

Thanks to technology advancements and the use precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage information to make it easier for them to pinpoint applying glyphosate in specific zones.

It is not common for pesticide residues to be discovered in food. However, it can nevertheless cause harm if it is. The CFIA ensures farmers use pesticides correctly and stay within established residue limits.16 On the rare occasions that it is detected at small amounts (e.g., 1 part per billion) the amount is below the limits set by the Government of Canada, and not a health or safety concern17 as it would not be a risk to human beings or animals.18
