This Is A New Project

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (center) has signed up a variety of famous names from the sciences and literature including (L to R) authors Neil Gaiman and George R. R. Martin, science educator Bill Nye and astronomer Amy Mainzer to help design the game. FilmMagic/Fox/Ulf andersen/Steve J. Brown/Getty Images

Over on Kickstarter scientist and science communication expert Neil deGrasse Tyson has a crowdfunding campaign running with the aim of funding a unique type of computer game. "Space Odyssey" is the title, and the production team behind it hopes to create a game that is fun to play and simultaneously instructive about physics, biology, and space.

The players will discover what goes into vehicle and robot design as they design their own unique machinery. They'll travel to other worlds in an open-world "sandbox" setting. Some may even have life. One instance could have a participant pilot a spacecraft through an asteroidal belt or design a robot capable of mining comets to extract precious resources. The team is planning to integrate virtual reality experiences as well, putting players in the center of the action. Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by Loretta Falcone (rocket scientist), Janna Levin (cosmologist), Charles Liu (astrophysicist), Carolyn Porco (planetary scientist), Amy Mainzer (astronomer), Mike Massimino (science communicator), and Bill Nye (science communicator). He invited authors such as Neil Gaiman and Larry Niven, Peter Beagle, George R. R. Martin to assist in the creative world-building. A variety of other writers, artists, game designers, scientists and other notable individuals in the scientific and creative fields are contributing to the effort.

Although this is a brand new project, it's not the first instance of an educational computer game. From classics from the past like "Oregon Trail" to modified versions of the well-known game " Minecraft ," game designers and educators have long recognized the benefits of of teaching through play. Tyson's game, which's full name is "Neil deGrasse Tyson Presents Space Odyssey" - The Video Game", is a bold and exciting game.

The Kickstarter campaign, which has a goal of raising $314,159 (a seemingly insignificant amount until you think of the pi digits) is set to end on the 29th of July, which is a Saturday. The administrators admit that the money raised will make up a small portion of the money that the developers from Whatnot Entertainment will need to create "Space Odyssey" real. If all goes well you could soon be able go off to explore the world from the comfort of your sofa.

This is what's really interesting: Neil deGrasse Tyson spoke on the topic "Stuff You Should Know" on the HowStuffWorks podcast. He stated that the goal is to expand global education to increase the chances that human culture will produce "another Einstein."
