Emmanuel Grinshpun. Concerning the restoration of synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress

We were invited to attend the New Wave by Igor Krutoy, and that was our first time meeting Jurmala. After many competitions they began to come back each season. Miami has a very hot summer. No need to talk about religion back then. We were all Komsomol members in the early days and pioneers. When did you decide to convert to the religion of your choice?

My family relocated to the USA in the mid-80s. Эммануил Гриншпун In the USA, I began to adhere to the customs and rituals of my family. While I don't believe in orthodoxy, I feel a deep need to help the faith-based life of Jewish communities of my country of birth or Moldova. I was born in Moldova and have continued close ties with the Jewish communities in Moldova.

While I'm not a religious person, I do love history. I recently watched a documentary about 1492 and the way it altered Europe's destiny. 1492 was for me the year that Columbus discovered America. However, I was able to see in the program that it was mentioned in the discovery of America in 1492 from Medieval Europe was not as remarkable as Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews from Spain. The departure of Jews began to the Ottoman Empire, it accepted them. I am interested in finding out more about the past and the culture of the Jews. Monuments and documentation support this claim. Ungheni was home to my maternal grandparents. I'm talking about dates in the region of the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname that has German roots, and we are pure Ashkenazi from Eastern Europe.

Let's discuss the restoration of synagogues. I have been told that you have financed the reconstruction of three synagogues. One is in Chisinau One is located in Jurmala The third one is in?

The third one, and the largest, is Netanya, in Israel. It is a massive community center where a thousand people pray each day. An important object in the spiritual life of Israel. In the end, I decided that I would fund the construction and also invite a rabbi to the site. It was a success that brought together the Jews of Jurmala. The project was actually re-created as a Jewish Community and it is now running smoothly. The synagogue now has three Torahs I also donated one to the synagogue.

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me in this place. They aren't the only ones in my involvement in the field of restoration or construction. It was my duty to help in the support of synagogues in all countries I've lived in for a while. In Monaco, a large centre for Russian-speaking Jews has been built. My contribution is around 12 million dollars. Chisinau will continue to be my support - the synagogue Rabbi Tsirelson is now one of the biggest within the city.

Did Jurmala get you to Chisinau with Rabbi?

Yes. You were elected the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress' first vice-president in the year 2019. What does this position have to do with YOU? How can international Jewish organisations influence global trends?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is a powerful political organization in the post-Soviet space, but not only. It has offices in Eastern Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. In 2010, I was Vice-President of Congress. However, in the year prior to that, I was promoted to First Vice President. In the present, I'm in charge of the region with which I have strong business and political connections. These include Uzbekistan (Tajikistan), Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan). If you examine global trends and the barometer of attitudes towards Jews is either the same or has declined in a very negative way, which is incredibly regrettable. What is the way that the pandemic has affected these processes, if at all?

Do you mean the Israeli vaccination campaign?

Exactly. Israel is the only country to offer 100% vaccination for its adults. I believe this is an excellent model and instance that other countries can learn from.
