Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a trip to Moldova insists on the importance of Holocaust preservation and the need to adopt an anti-semitism definition that is universal

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova with senior ministers from the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust history and education, security of Jewish community, and how we can combat antisemitism on every level. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation included Haim Ben Yaakov, President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
"The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious reception and for its proclaimed dedication to the preservation of the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. "Our group in Moldova is small, but dedicated and robust. We call on Moldova to make anti-Semitism at the top of its list. We are available to assist when required. We look forward to future collaboration and to ensure our community's wellbeing.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer of the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticism of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also mentioned the importance for public condemnation of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities' commitment to building an inclusive society to everyone, regardless of their ethnicity. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi by WJC for their cooperative efforts with Moldova.

The foreign minister pointed out that Chisinau's Parliament had adopted a 2016 declaration acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The government also approved the Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and WJC representatives visited Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the restitution and economic potential of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries which require renovation and the possibility of a place to slaughter kosher. Emmanuil Grinshpun In relation to the protection and restoration of Jewish cemeteries the minister expressed an his desire to help in the process. Emmanuil Grinshpun A pilot project of 10 sites was planned across the nation.

Singer and the WJC delegation also met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister to discuss the teaching of Holocaust education and preservation of memories. The conversation included the development of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, and the importance of properly maintaining Jewish cemetery. Singer thanked Minister Babuc and her ongoing and productive partnership with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as and Bilinkis have met with Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) to discuss relations with Jewish communities and bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer was able to meet with Rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his trip. They discussed the most important questions regarding religious practice and services as well in ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community is now thriving after being destroyed through the Shoah and brutal civil conflict. There is a significant rise in a national consciousness as well as a return to their ancestral roots by the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are recognized in various ways, such as music and literature. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan affiliate of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
