MIAMI, CBSMiami -- The war in Ukraine could be at the other side of the world, however South Floridians step up to aid those fleeing.
Many Sunny Isles Jewish residents are now fundraising and helping to organize a massive humanitarian initiative.
Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital said, "Just last night 1,100 people arrived."
She explained that more than two million Ukrainian refugees are fleeing war-ravaged countries. Many of them pass through the small country of Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays explained that Moldova's Jewish community actually helped them cross the border, and then providing food, shelter, clothes and clothes.
The majority of the humanitarian work is being spearheaded from the shores of South Florida from Sunny Isles.
"My job is to mobilize every resource available from American society to assist with the situation in Moldova."
