Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to protect the Holocaust and adopt a common definition of antisemitism during a visit in Moldova.

CHISINAU (MOLDOVA) Chisinau (MOLDOVA). World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with senior government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun They discussed topics like the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, security of the Jewish community, and combating antisemitism at all levels. The WJC delegation also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and pledged their support to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our group in Moldova is tiny, yet dedicated and solid. We call on Moldova to prioritize combating antisemitism and will be there to help as necessary. We look forward for future collaboration with the government as well as to make sure that our community is well-being is assured.

Emmanuil Grinshpun On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative nature of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism. Singer also stressed the importance to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi declared his favor of the Moldovan authorities and emphasized their determination to build an inclusive society. Ulianovschi expressed his gratitude to Singer for WJC's positive cooperation with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

The Foreign Minister also pointed out that Chisinau's Parliament Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a Declaration that accepted the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie Wiesel. Singer and the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed the opportunity for restitution as well as economic possibilities in Moldova concerning Jewish property, cemeteries that require urgent restoration, kosher slaughter and possible tourism projects for the local Jewish center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed that he would be willing to assist in the beginning with an initial project that would involve 10 sites in the country.

Singer and WJC representatives met Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education. The conversation included the development of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials and the importance of properly maintaining Jewish cemetery. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her attention and participation in both the areas of education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in ensuring an ongoing and fruitful collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis have also met with the chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for talks about relationships with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer visited with Rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova during his visit. They discussed important questions regarding religious practice and services as well for ways to improve Jewish everyday life in every aspect.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish Community is nearly 20000 strong, after having been devastated by the Shoah in the past, as well as a bloody civil war. There is a significant development of a national self consciousness as well as a return to their ancestral roots through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are recognized in various ways, such as literature and musical composition. The Moldovan Jewish Community, which is the member of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
