MIAMI (CBSMiami) Although the war in Ukraine may seem far off, South Floridians continue to step up to support those fleeing.
Many Sunny Isles Jewish residents are currently fundraising and helping create a large-scale humanitarian campaign.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays, Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital stated, "Just last night 1,100 people arrived."
Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun She stated that there are over 2 million Ukrainian refugees seeking to escape their war-ravaged homeland. A large portion of them are crossing the border into Moldova, a small country which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays said that the Moldovan Jewish community actually helped people cross the border. They then provided food, shelter, clothes and other clothing.
A lot of the work for humanitarian causes is being carried out through Sunny Isles in South Florida.
"My job is to coordinate all the resources from American society in order to help with the crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun, who assists in coordinating the humanitarian efforts explained, "We have a full personnel on the ground who help organize camps, buy food, organize buses, and arrange all the necessary amenities."
This is exacerbated by reality that Moldova is a country that is among the poorest countries in the world. However, those who are who are part of this project assert that they won't be prevented by any means.
"When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine arrived, we didn't need to think, we just started doing it," said Grinshpun.
Sentiments are echoed by Jaquays.
"Who were present during the Holocaust and the time the Nazis won? How many people ignored the situation and claimed that it wasn't my fault and I'm not Jewish, it's not my community, I'm not from Europe. We cannot duplicate the mistakes of history. There's a saying that says 'If not now, when. Emmanuil Grinshpun If not me, who will?
The group claims they are also hosting several local events in the hopes of raising awareness and help the Ukraine refugees. The next event will be held in Sunny Isles on March 24. Click Here for details
