MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The war in Ukraine may be in the other part of the world however South Floridians are part of those helping those who are leaving the country.
Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping in raising funds and coordinating an effort to help the homeless.
"Just last night 1,100 came," said Marsha Jaquays, with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
She said that there are over 2 million Ukrainian refugees seeking to escape their war-torn home. A large portion of them have crossed the border to Moldova which is a tiny country which shares a border with Ukraine.
Emmanuil Grinshpun "From Moldova, this Jewish community is helping them get across the border and then maybe giving them shelter, food, and clothes," added Jaquays.
The core of a lot of the humanitarian work can be found in South Florida.
"My mission is to gather as much American social resources as possible to address the crisis in Moldova. Emmanuil grinshpun, an aid worker, claimed that there was a whole team working on the ground to coordinate humanitarian efforts in Moldova.
Even worse is the fact that Moldova is among the poorest countries around the globe. Emmanuil Grinshpun But, people who are part in this effort say that they will never stop helping.
Grinshpun said, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters came, we didn't have to think. Emmanuil Grinshpun We began doing it."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
