According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical is recalling the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System because the misplacement of nasogastric or nasoente tubes has resulted in injuries and patient deaths. The recall covers 629 devices sold within the United States.
Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to view the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This permits the placement of a medical feed tube. Incorrectly inserting a tube can cause damage to the vocal cords, the lungs and trachea. According to Avanos Medical's recall notice it has been reported that there were 60 injuries and 23 patient deaths in the last year due to improper placement of nasogastric feeding tubes while using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and pneumothorax. feeding tube placement Perforation (a hole or opening within the lung's wall) as well as pneumonia. the pleural effusion (excess liquid between the chest cavity and the lungs) are just a few incidents.
Avanos Medical described a plan for patients to receive a new labeling to confirm proper use of the nasogastric tube and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
