Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to accidents and deaths that result from incorrect placement of the nasoenteric tube. The recall covers 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to visualize the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows for the placing of an medical feed tube. When a tube is placed incorrectly, it could cause harm to vocal cords, lungs , and trachea. Avanos Medical has reported that there have been more than sixty-three injuries and 23 deaths related to misplacement in the nasogastric feeding tubes with CORTRAK*2's Ental Access System. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or pneumothorax, perforation (a hole or opening within the wall of a lung) as well as pneumonia. Avanos Medical Pleural effusion (excess liquid between the lungsand chest cavity) are just a few injuries.
