Minecraft Java Edition Will Soon Require A Microsoft Account

After Mojang's acquisition of Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been running as is. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system, however, Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island until now. Java Edition will soon require a Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least be getting an exclusive cape for your problems.



In early 2021, you will be required to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system. Serverstat.net claims that this is to introduce two-factor authentication in order to enhance security. However it will also allow better parental controls, chat block, invitation blocking, and account integration with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.



Mojang does not plan to change Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain completely distinct games. You'll be able to continue using your existing Java username, but when you sign up for an account with a Microsoft account for the first time, you might have to swap account names. If you already have a Microsoft account then you'll be able to merge your Minecraft login immediately.



To make it easier to cope with the switch, Mojang is giving away what was once Java Edition's most sought-after item which was an eagle. You'll get a cape for free for participating in the transition, and while it won't feature the exclusive designs of the Minecon mantles but it will give everyone an opportunity to feel regal for a while.



Although nothing is likely to change, players do have concerns. For instance, the more restrictive terms of service offered by Microsoft might lead to bans, which could result in players being denied access to Minecraft.
