Deepworld is a 2D built-in sandbox that's similar to Minecraft. I met them at GDC in March and informed them that the game would be larger than they anticipated. Although they have extensive experience in developing servers and software running a massive game like Deepworld will require a significant investment. It looks like they now are in agreement. The game has spawned an Kickstarter project to try and raise funds early for servers and development.
The group is offering a wide range of prizes to its members, including your own servers and worlds as well art books and other merchandise. You can also consider purchasing your own items, names, and even images to play the game. Multiplayer servers The goal is US$20,000 overall and the group has already collected around $4,000. They plan to make the project a full-time endeavor and this funding will enable them to do that.
I'm sure I'd like them to be successful. Deepworld looks fantastic and I'm with you when I first saw it. I believe that the Mac (and iOS) would be greatly benefited by games like this.
