Microsoft Is Developing A Netflix-like Streaming Service For Xbox Games

Microsoft is developing an online streaming service similar to Netflix for video games. It promises to bring 'console-quality gaming to any device'.

The Redmond-based company claims that gamers will be able to stream blockbuster movies to their Xbox laptop, computer, or mobile.

It is not clear if players will be required to pay for individual games or whether they will be able to access the entire library for a monthly cost including video on demand.

Microsoft believes that streaming will replace dedicated consoles entirely The company is hinting that a new Xbox hardware is already in development.

Microsoft is building a Netflix-style streaming service for video games that will bring 'console-quality gaming to any device'. During Minecraft Servers , Microsoft unveiled 50 new games to fans - a record for the Redmond-based firm.

Phil Spencer, Xbox boss, teased the future video game streaming service, which claimed to allow gamers to play console-quality games on any device.

Executive President of Gaming Phil Spencer revealed Microsoft's plans to launch a cloud-based service during its press conference at video game expo E3 in Los Angeles.

Spencer said: "Our cloud engineers are creating a gaming streaming network that will unlock console-quality gaming on any device.

"We are committed to improving your experience everywhere you want to play on - your Xbox, your PC and your smartphone.'

Cloud Gaming is a way players can have access to a vast library of titles without having to download or install each one.

Cloud gaming allows console-quality games to run on devices with less power, such as smartphones. All the heavy lifting happens via a server and not on the device used by the player.

This is quite different from traditional console games that require processing everything locally on the disk and thus require powerful chipsets.

Spencer, Xbox boss, did not announce a date for the service's launch on-stage. However, he has previously hinted that Microsoft's game streaming service could be available before 2020.

The company isn't the first to show an interest in a game streaming service, with the rival PlayStation already offering gamers the option of streaming games to their devices.

Dubbed PlayStation Now, the subscription service costs PS12.99 ($20) a month. It lets users stream more than 500 titles on their Sony PS4 or Windows PC.

Sony launched its cloud gaming service following it bought rival services Gaikai and OnLive.

However, despite its emphasis on streaming video games, Microsoft has not abandoned its hardware plans.

It is not clear if users will have to pay for individual titles or the possibility of being able to access the entire library for a flat monthly fee, much like Netflix.

But despite hinting at a streaming service, Microsoft revealed plans to continue building Xbox hardware and consoles, with new models being developed.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer remained tight-lipped on any specifics about the forthcoming console, however, the executive did reveal that backwards-compatibility with older video games would play significant role for the new hardware

Phil Spencer used the E3 keynote to reveal the follow-up to the Xbox One, with hints that Microsoft might have multiple new consoles in the works.

The same team that delivered an unprecedented performance with Xbox One X is now deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once more fulfill our promise to set the bar for console gaming,' he said.

Spencer remained tight-lipped on any specifics about the console, however, the executive did reveal that backwards-compatibility with Xbox One games would play significant role for the new hardware.

He told Eurogamer: 'As you think about this next generation of hardware that will eventually arrive, many of the massive, huge games people are playing today will continue to exist when the next hardware is released.

You won't see an "2" in the final game of these games, as they are trying to get you to the next version. In the old days of games shipping playing and moving on - a console switch was a simple function to perform.

"We played through it in Minecraft. We didn't launch Minecraft 2 on Xbox One to force everyone to upgrade to the next console. That's not what Minecraft players would like to see. They want Minecraft to be improved.

'When you look at games like PUBG and Fortnite and you think about these large ecosystems and games that will be available, when new hardware arrives, people will continue to want to play these games, and it's going to be crucial for us as platforms to be able to support them.'

Microsoft has revealed Halo Infinite the latest installment in its popular Halo series. This will only be available on Xbox-branded consoles

Elsewhere, Microsoft showcased a record 50 new games for fans during its E3 presentation.

The company took the wraps off of a selection of exclusive titles, including brand new entries in its Halo and Gears of War series.

Spencer branded the list of games coming out as the company's "largest gaming portfolio ever'.
