Emmanuel Grinshpun. The restoration and expansion of synagogues.
The topic of the conversation with Emmanuil Grinshpun is the revival of synagogues. The conversation was narrowly focused. There are many topics to discuss in the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. It was a pleasure to meet you. I don't think we've met for over five years. Where are you currently located?

My family and I emigrated to the USA in the mid-80s. We all can agree that that was when I first began to respect the customs of my country. However, even today I am far from the traditional religion. I am just feeling an inner need to help, to the best of my ability, the religious life of the Jewish community in the countries where I live or in Moldova which is where I am from and with which I continue to have the most close connections.

It's true that I am definitely not a religious person However, I enjoy the history of my country very much. I was watching an documentary on 1492 and the way it altered Europe's fate. 1492 is for me the year in which Columbus discovered America. But, I saw clearly in the program that the program mentioned the discovery in America in 1492 of Medieval Europe was not as remarkable as Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews from Spain. The Ottoman Empire accepted the Jews as they fled the country. I was in search of more information on the historical background of Jews. Would you recommend this book?

There are numerous books. In terms of "personal" historical .... Do you know the genealogy of your family? Unfortunately, my family tree is only one step ahead of 1910 and my mother. On the paternal side, I am one step forward, but not more.

The paternal line of our family was in the Floresti region for over a hundred years. The evidence from the archives and monuments prove that the family of Floresti was wealthy in 1830. They had numerous shops, a furniture factory and land plots. My maternal ancestors also lived in Ungheni. It is the region that was in the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname that comes from German roots. We are Ashkenazis pure and straight and straight from Eastern Europe.

Let's now discuss the restoration of the synagogues. I was told by you that three synagogues were being renovated. One is located in Chisinau, one is located in Jurmala, and the third?

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me in this place. However, these synagogues weren't the only ones I've been involved with in their reconstruction or restoration. It was my duty to contribute to the support of synagogues throughout the countries I've lived in for some time. The synagogue I support, Monaco, Miami, is a huge community center for Russian-speaking Jews. The estimated value is 12 million USD. I don't stop supporting Chisinau and it is going to be the largest synagogue, the synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson.

Did Jurmala get you to Chisinau with Rabbi?

Yes. It is difficult to find the right rabbi in the community. Due to the intertwining of different concerns, he should be a very diplomatic and non-conflict person, capable of integrating seamlessly into the lives of the community. I'm pleased to say that both in Chisinau, and in Jurmala the Rabbis were able to be integrated into the community.

You were elected the first vice-president 2019, of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this role mean to you, and how do international Jewish organisations influence global trends?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is a powerful political organization in the post-Soviet space, but not only. It has branches in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In 2010, I served as Vice President of Congress. But, in the year prior, I was appointed the First Vice President. In the present, I am in charge of the region in which I have long-standing connections to both politics and business - these are known as the "countries", Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan. The world's trends show that the barometer of attitudes towards Jews is either at the same level as previously or has dipped and is very depressing. "Down" also refers to countries like France, Germany or France which are developing. They are no longer secure for Jews. They are dangerous and alarming process for all of us.

How has the pandemic affected these processes, and how has it affected these?

This isn't my opinion. Concerning the pandemic, however, I'd rather emphasize how strong a society can be when they are prepared for any challenge and are willing and able to work in tandem.

Do you refer to the Israeli vaccination campaign?

Exactly. Israel is the first country in the world to provide 100% vaccination for its adult population. It is an excellent example that I think other countries should consider.
