No. My family's story over many generations is linked only with Moldova, or in the case of historical names, then Bessarabia. Jurmala entered our lives by chance and very prosaically. We were invited to the New Wave by Igor Krutoy, and that was our first experience with Jurmala. After winning many competitions the group began going there each summer. Miami's climate during the summer is not the best. We rented a home for several years, and consequently, we've already purchased it.

Now I know why you told me that there were synagogues located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We are almost of the same age. Born in the USSR. It wasn't necessary to talk about religion at the time. All of us were Komsomol members and pioneers. What was the moment you began to turn to the religion of your choice?

My family moved to the USA in the mid-80s. It was there that I began to observe the customs and rituals of my family. While I'm not part of the orthodox religion of Christianity I am still adamant about the need to be a part of as best I can and to be a part of the life of the Jewish communities of the countries I reside in or Moldova. This is where I grew up and with which I've maintained the most intimate connections with.

Although I'm not religious, I still love the history of my country. Recently, I watched a program about the events of 1492 which changed Europe's fate. 1492 is for me the year that Columbus was the year Columbus discovered America. It was also stated in the program I was watching that, from the point of view of Medieval Europe, the discovery of America in 1492 wasn't so significant as the removal of the Jews from Spain by the Spanish monarchs. The Ottoman Empire accepted the Jews when the exodus began. I was searching for more details about the background of Jews. Would you recommend any book?

In terms of "personal" history .... Do you know the genealogy of your family? Unfortunately, I do not know much beyond my grandmother and 1910. Paternal side: One step beyond but not enough.

Our family has been in Floresti for many hundred years on the paternal side. There is evidence in the form of documents and monuments that indicate that by 1830, they were extremely prosperous and had a furniture factory, several shops, land plots. My maternal ancestors were also in Ungheni. This is the area of the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname having German roots, and we are the pure Ashkenazi from Eastern Europe.

Let's talk about the revival of synagogues. I was told that you had financed the reconstruction of three synagogues. One is in Chisinau One is located in Jurmala and the third?

It is situated in Netanya in Israel. Netanya is home to more than 1,000 people who worship daily. This is an important building for the religious life in Israel. The second synagogue in Jurmala. It was the time when the Second World War began and the Jurmala synagogue was among the last to be destroyed. Yes. Alexander Bilinkis and Alexander Weinstein have been my partners. These three synagogues were not the only ones I was involved in the process of restoration and building. In all the countries where I've been for a long period I felt it was my obligation to make a feasible contribution to support synagogues. Therefore, my contribution comes from Monaco, in Miami a large community center for Russian-speaking Jews is currently being built with a value of around 12 million dollars. I do not stop helping Chisinau and now it will be the largest synagogue in the city, the synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson.

Did you invite a Rabbi to Chisinau in addition to Jurmala?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress has been an important political entity in post-Soviet Europe, however it's not the sole one. It also has offices in Australia and Japan. In 2010, I served as the Vice-President of Congress. However, in the previous year, I was appointed First Vice president. In the present, I am in charge of the region in which I have had historically strong connections to both politics and business These are the "countries", Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan. As for trends across the globe the barometer of attitudes toward Jews remains at the current level or has decreased and is extremely sad. Moreover, "down" - this refers to countries that are developed such like Belgium, Germany, France as well as the United States. They are no longer secure for Jews. These are very dangerous, alarming procedures for all of us.

And, by the way Has the pandemic had an impact on these processes?

It isn't my opinion. To be more precise I'd rather emphasize the possibilities of a country or a society when they are ready to take on any challenge and are able to be effective and united with respect to the pandemic.

Are you talking about the vaccination program in Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the only country that offers the complete vaccination of its population of adults. I consider this to be an excellent example and a lesson which other countries can take note of.
