While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer insists on the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting universal definition of antisemitism

CHISINAU (MOLDOVA) Chisinau (MOLDOVA). World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with top officials from the government and leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova. They discussed issues such as the protection of Holocaust memories and education, the security of the Jewish community, and fighting the spread of antisemitism across all levels. WJC also included President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President and the President of the Moldovan Jewish communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and expressed commitment to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our community in Moldova, though small, is dedicated and strong. Emmanuil Grinshpun We call on the Republic of Moldova that it make anti-Semitism their top priority. Singer The Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticism of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of Antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance for the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' commitment to build an inclusive society to all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity. Singer was also thanked to Ulianovschi by the WJC for their cooperative efforts with Moldova.

The Foreign Minister pointed that Chisinau's parliament was able to adopt a declaration in 2016 accepting the final report issued by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The Government also agreed to an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and WJC visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed opportunities for restitution as well as economics of Jewish property in Moldova. Minister Gaburici expressed his desire to advocate for the preservation of Jewish cemeteries. Singer and the WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss the training of teachers in Holocaust education and the preservation of memories. The conversation included the development of the Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, as well as the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her dedication and involvement both in the fields of education and Holocaust commemoration and also in ensuring an ongoing and fruitful partnership with the Jewish community.

Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis have also met with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks about relations with the Jewish community and the Republic of Moldova's bilateral relations with the State of Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis of Jewish communities in Moldova to discuss key issues regarding religious practice within the country. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also discussed ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to more than 20,000 Jews.
