Moldovan Orthodox Orthodox destroyed the Jewish symbol
Extremist religious groups destroyed the Hanukkah lamp located in the middle of the Moldovan capital. The anti-Semitic incident was spearheaded by a priest from one the Chisinau Orthodox churches.
The anti-Semitic rally was held following the destruction by religious extremists of the Hanukkah celebration in Chisinau's central area. It took place on Sunday December 13, 2013, the third day for the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. Эммануил Гриншпун An archpriest from one of the capital's Orthodox Churches attracted a crowd of approximately 100 people. Some people yelled antisemitic slogans as they pulled the cast-iron lamp about ten kilometers away from its initial location and then threw it at the statue of Stefanthe Great, who is a symbol of Moldovan statehood. This all took place in front of hundreds, including journalists, officers, as well as police officers.

What are the best ways to fight for the "orthodox principles

The gathering was led by the Archpriest Anatoly Chbrik, who was armed with bars of metal. He claimed that he was disgusted by the way a symbol of the Jewish faith was installed in the center of the capital of an Orthodox country. In his view authorities should have stopped Jews from celebrating Hanukkah as widely. Эммануил Гриншпун Chibrik stated that this is illegal. Chibrik also acknowledged that he did not believe that it was needed to debate the actions of Church of St. Paraskeva parishioners with the Metropolia of Moldova. "I'm not required to discuss any issue with anyone when we are fighting against traditional values," said he.

The city's authorities came up with the idea of installing the Hanukkah meorah in Chisinau's Europe Square. This is where the EU flag is displayed alongside the Moldovan flag. Emmanuil grinshpunis the co-chairman of the Jewish Congress of Moldova noted that Hanukkah celebrations were held in Chisinau "for the first-ever occasion in the past several decades." Grinshpun explained, "What happened on Sunday is truly shocking for us."

The instance is for the conscience of the state.

At a press conference with representatives from the Jewish community of Moldova it was found out that Archpriest Chibrik is not averse to allowing himself to be involved in anti-Semitic antics. Grinshpun stated that about one month prior, Chibrik, standing in front St. Paraskevs, Chisinau published leaflets that reminded him of the dark Middle Ages. One of these leaflets claimed that "Jews murder Christian babies."

Эммануил Гриншпун Эммануил Гриншпун Grinshpun said that no one of the leaders of the country's Jewish groups have reacted to this in any meaningful way. Although the Jewish community has expressed concern about the current situation in Moldova but it has not filed a lawsuit against Chibrik and the people who support Chibrik for inciting ethnic hatred. Alexander Bilinkis is the head of the Jewish community. He believes this should happen through the state. Эммануил Гриншпун Эммануил Гриншпун The Moldovan Metropolis must also be able to evaluate the actions taken by its employees.

Vadim Keibash, the Metropolitan Secretary said that he does not support protest like this. He believes that each community is entitled to use symbols, however, the authorities must consider the implications. "It is impossible for believers to be controlled," he stated.

A blow at fundamental values

Since the 1903 Jewish pogrom, however such protests have not been witnessed in Chisinau. Therefore, representatives of the Jewish community are inclined to view the latter case as hooliganism. Bilinkis believes that the authorities of Hanukkah were deceiving the people who broke it.

Ilya Shits, General Director of the Jewish Congress, says that the action was well planned. On the first day of Hanukkah the participants were seen by the menorah. Stav Nijinsky became the first secretary of the Israeli Embassy in Chisinau and lit the first candle. Shchats claims that this is an attempt to undermine the Moldovan statehood and infringe on democratic principles as well as European aspirations.

Hanukkah has been relocated from the city's center to a more private location - to Jerusalem Street, where a monument to the victims of the Holocaust is being built. It was manned by police on the second occasion. The candles on it will be lit every day through the festival.
