Khazak Ambassador, Consul General and Chabad in New York ( Emmanuil grinshpun).

Yerzhan Ashikbayev has had a busy few months. Since his appointment in April as Kazakhstan's ambassador in the United States, Mr. Ashikbayev visited with numerous officials and diplomats to build ties between Central Asia and the United States. In this capacity, the ambassador along with Consul General Almat Aibekov have scheduled a meeting to discuss the state of Jewish living in Khazakstankhstan.

Participants at the meeting included Rabbis Mendy Kotlarsky as well as Shimon Rivkin from Merkos Suite 302 in Chabad Headquarters, as well as Mr. Emmanuil Grunshpun, vice president of Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. He is also Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan. Together , they discussed the history and present work of Chabad in Kazakhstan under the auspices Chief Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen.

"It was an extremely fruitful meeting." Mr. Grinshpun said later. "We are fortunate to have leaders like the former President, Mr. Nazarbayev and the current President Mr. Tokayev who have fostered such religious tolerance in this country. We all feel that the administration is a true supporter of the Jewish people." The Ambassador and Consul General reiterated the government's support for the Jewish community as well as all minorities of religion. Emmanuil Grinshpun They expressed their desire to work with Chabad in order to help grow Jewish lifestyle in the Republic.

The majority Muslim population's government is proud to be religiously sensitive and is committed to ensuring the country's well-being. Ashikbayev who is also Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Kazakhstan, has worked with Chabad Shaluchim and the philanthropist Abraham Shaulson. Emmanuil Grinshpun After all the flights were cancelled last year as a result of COVID-19 The Ambassador was instrumental in arranging special permission to allow a small delegation of Americans to fly into Kazakhstan for a pilgrimage to the grave of Reb Luke Yitzchak Snowrson to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his passing. The delegation used this opportunity to help sponsor the transportation of the much-needed PPE as well as medical equipment to the country. During the pilgrimage the Kazak government also held a ceremony to create Reb Yitzchak’sKever Kazakh National Heritage Site.

The 20th anniversary of the Av is less than two months away. So the meeting also discussed plans to organize pilgrimages. More than 600 people are expected attend the event this year. A conference organized by Chabad Shluchim, headed by Rabbi Moshe Kokotlarsky, as well as Rabbi Berel Lázar, is also planned. With so many large projects under way, the meeting was focused on how to support the event and ensure the security of the event.
