Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) emphasized the importance of preserving the Holocaust and adopt a universal definition antisemitism while on an official visit to Moldova.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in Moldova with senior ministers from the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture, security of Jewish community and ways to combat antisemitism on every level. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov as well as the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and pledged to support keeping alive the Holocaust's memories. Singer of the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday regarding the criticisms over the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance of the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi spoke out in support of Moldovan authorities and highlighted their commitment to building an inclusive society. Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi as a positive cooperation with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister further noted that the Chisinau Parliament had adopted in 2016 an agreement to accept the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017 the Government ratified an Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday, to discuss opportunities for restitution and economic growth of Jewish property in Moldova. These included cemeteries which require renovation and the possibility of a place for kosher slaughter. Concerning the protection of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, the minister expressed his desire to assist with the process, including an initial program of 10 sites.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education as well as the preservation of memories. The discussion included topics such as the creation of a Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated Holocaust victims and the need for proper and dignified maintenance of Jewish graveyards. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc in exchange for her contribution to education and Holocaust commemoration, and as for ensuring a productive and continued cooperation with Jewish communities.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis were also in conversation together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss issues on relations with the Jewish community, as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer also met with rabbis from Jewish communities in Moldova to discuss key concerns regarding religious practices in Moldova. Singer also discussed ways to improve Jewish everyday activities in all aspects.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. Today, Moldova's Jewish community has been resurrected following the destruction caused by the Shoah. There has been a huge rise in a national consciousness and a return of their roots through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are recognized in various ways, such as music and literature. The Moldovan Jewish community is represented by the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova as the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress.
