While in Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer emphasizes the significance of Holocaust preservation and the adoption of a universal definition of antisemitism

CHISINAU, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government ministers and leaders of the local Jewish community, for talks about the protection of Holocaust memory and education, security of the Jewish community as well as the necessity to tackle the spread of antisemitism across all levels. The WJC delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. Singer was also adamant about the need to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' commitment to building an open society to everyone regardless of ethnicity. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi by WJC for their cooperation with Moldova.

The foreign minister also emphasized that the Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a Declaration in support of the report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie wiesel. A plan to implement it was approved by the Government in January 2017.

Singer and the WJC's delegation visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion focused on the restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that require renovation as well as economic opportunities related to kosher meat. Additionally, there was the possibility for tourist activities for the local Jewish Center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries the minister stated his intention to assist in the process, starting with an initial pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation have met with Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways they can train teachers in Holocaust education and how to preserve the memories. The discussions included the establishment of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, and the importance of properly maintaining Jewish cemetery. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc in return for her contribution to education and Holocaust memorialization, as well in ensuring a fruitful and continuing collaboration with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions about relationships with the Jewish community as also bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer visited with rabbis representing the Jewish communities of Moldova. Singer discussed crucial issues related to religious practice as well as the services offered. Singer also focused on ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all its aspects.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was destroyed by the Shoah and an unrest, is now flourishing and spread across the nation. Emmanuil Grinshpun There is an increase in national self-consciousness and also the return to their roots by the Jews Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Jewish culture is celebrated in many forms including musical composition, literature, and the theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan affiliate of the World Jewish Congress.
