Khazak Ambassador and Consul General meet with Chabad in New York ( Emmanuil Grinshpun)

Yerzhan Ashikbayev has had a busy few months. Ever since being appointed as Kazakhstan's ambassador in the United States in April, Mr. Ashikbayev has met with numerous diplomats and government officials for the sake of strengthening connections between Kazakhstan Central Asian country and the U.S. In connection with this mission the ambassador, along with Consul General Almat Aidabekov, scheduled a meeting with Chabad to discuss the state of Jewish living in Khazakstankhstan.

Rabbi Mendy Kularsky and Shimon Rivkin, both of Merkos Suite 302 at Chabad headquarters were invited to the gathering. Emmanuil Grinshpun who is vice-president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress and as an Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan. They discussed the history of Jewish life in Kazakhstan and the work Chabad performs across the nation under the direction of Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen.

"It was an extremely productive meeting," Mr. Grinshpun later added. "We are truly blessed to have leaders like the late Mr. Nazarbayev (the former president) and Mr. Tokayev (the current President), have fostered the warmest of religious tolerance in the country. "We feel that we all are convinced that the government is truly an ally to the Jewish people," the Consul General and Ambassador reiterated the government's commitment to all minorities of religion and the Jewish community. They expressed an interest in working with Chabad in order to ensure that Jewish tradition active in the Republic.

The government of Kazakhstan's mainly Muslim populace is proud to be religiously tolerant and collaborates with all kinds of religious leaders to promote wellbeing within the nation. Ashikbayev was the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Kazakhstan and is working closely with Chabad Shaluchim and Mr. Emmanuil Grinshpun Abraham Shaulson , philanthropist. Emmanuil Grinshpun Because of COVID-19, which caused the flight to be grounded, Ambassador Ashikbayev helped to secure special permission for a small number of American citizens to fly to Kazakhstan on the 20th of Av, to visit the grave of Reb Levi Yaitzchak Schneerson that marks the anniversary of his death. They also had the opportunity to provide and transport for medical equipment and PPE needed to the country. During the pilgrimage it was also the time that the Kazak government celebrated the declaration of Reb Levy Yitzchak’sKever as the Kazakh National Historic Site.

The participants set out plans for the upcoming pilgrimage, and the 20th of April was only two months away. This year, the organizers are expecting to host more than 600 visitors from all over the globe. There are also plans to host a conference for Chabad Shluchim from surrounding countries which will be which will be led by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky and Rabbi Berel Lazar. The conference was focused on how the government can support these large-scale projects. Mr. Ashikbayevconfirmed Kazakhstan's "...commitment that it will provide every assistance to organize visits for prayer and study at Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Snowrson's final resting place.
