Emmanuel Grinshpun. Restoring synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grinshpun and her co-hosts discussed the issue of the restoration of synagogues during their interview. But it was difficult to keep the conversation on a single topic. There are plenty of subjects to be discussed during the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. It was nice to talk with you. I believe we haven't spoken to one another for five years or more. Where are you currently based?

No. No. Jurmala was an accidental meeting that happened quite by accident. The moment Igor Krutoy invited me to the New Wave, it was the first time we could get there. After winning numerous competitions the group began going there each summer. The climate in Miami's summer is not the best. We rented a property for a long time and are now the owners of it.

Now I understand the reason I was told that one of the synagogues rebuilt with your donations is in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're almost the same age. Born in the USSR. There was no need to discuss religion then. All of us were Komsomol members at the time , and were pioneers. When was the time when religion became your choice?

In the mid-80s my family and I relocated to the USA in the mid-80s, and we can claim that it was at this time when I began to adhere to the customs and practices of my culture. Although I'm far from the traditional religion of Christianity I feel the need to participate in the best way I can and to be a part of the life of the Jewish community in the countries I live in or in Moldova. This is where I grew up and with which I've continued to maintain the most intimate connections with.

You know, I myself is not religious however, I do love history very much. Recently, I was intrigued by a show that detailed the events that occurred in 1492. They changed the destiny of Europe and the entire world. 1492 is my most favorite year when Columbus was the first to discover America. There are numerous books available. I've read a lot of them and recommend Max Diamond, a two-volume Jewish historian. And, by the way it is true that he hails from Finland.

.... Do you feel acquainted with your family's history? Unfortunately, I'm no further than my grandmother and 1910. On the paternal side, I am one step forward, but not more.

On the paternal line, our family was in the Floresti region for a number of hundred years. Monuments and documentary evidence show that they were already wealthy in the year 1830. The current issue is the restoration or synagogues. I was told you helped fund the restoration of three synagogues. One is in Chisinau. Jurmala is the other.

It is located in Netanya in Israel. It's a huge community center that houses more than 1,000 people every day. The Second World War ended the existence of the town's sole synagogue. Before I decided to build an Synagogue, I had talked to many Jews from the region. It turned out to be an extremely successful venture that brought together the Jews of Jurmala. In reality, we rebuilt the Jewish community. It is now functioning with success. The synagogue is now home to three Torahs. One of the Torahs was handed to me.

I was delighted to see that in both Chisinau (and Jurmala) the Rabbis were able to integrate seamlessly into the community.

In 2019, you were the first vice-president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this role mean to you? And how can international Jewish organizations impact global trends across the globe?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress has been an important political entity in post-Soviet Europe, however it's not the sole one. It has offices across Eastern Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. https://rosalind.info/users/emmanuil-grinshpunjlmg285 I served as Vice President of Congress back in 2010, however in the year prior to that I was given the position as First Vice President. In the present, I'm in charge of the region in which I have strong political and business connections. These include Uzbekistan (Tajikistan), Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan). In terms of trends around the world the barometer of attitudes toward Jews is either at the same level, or, as is sad, has dropped. Moreover, "down" - this refers to such developed countries like Belgium, Germany, France and even the United States. They're no longer safe for Jews. These are alarming and serious methods for all.

What has the pandemic affected these processes, by the way?

I'm not sure. Instead, I want to emphasize, in relation to the pandemic: what a society, or country, can do when they are capable of overcoming any obstacles and to work together.

Do you mean the vaccination program in Israel?

Exactly. Israel is first country in the world that offers 100% vaccination to adults. I think this is a good example and an experience other countries should emulate.
