Notes - notes.io

Since the launch of our internal programme InnovATe staff have submitted many valuable ideas, one bright idea in particular is already making ripples across the organisation – QR codes.

The Innovation Board selected this winning idea after evaluating all ideas that were submitted through the InnovATe Hub against standard criteria that looked at cost and benefit of implementation.

So what are QR (Quick Response) codes?

Quite simply: two-dimensional bar codes, that look similar to the picture below.

How does it work? You download an app and then use your mobile phone’s camera to simply scan the QR code image, which then connects you directly to mobile content. This could be anything from a website to a map.

“QR codes can be used to easily connect a mobile phone to a web page, generate a SMS or initiate a phone call,” says Bridget. “Mobile connectivity is mainstream now and QR codes will make it easier for our customers to connect with us on the go.”

Mark Sharman, Senior Communications Advisor and InnovATe team member also thinks QR codes could be a great initiative for Auckland Transport.

“The QR codes are a very simple idea that could have a positive impact on the business,” says Mark. “It’s another way to communicate with customers, but also shows that AT is keeping up with developments in new technology.

“It could benefit Auckland Transport customers where for example there’s not a lot of room on public facing information such as signage or posters, and when more detail about the project, campaign or service can be communicated. QR codes can be used for research purposes to obtain customer feedback, or to link to rich media content, for example campaign videos for Community Transport initiatives.”

Anand Naidu, InnovATe Project Leader, is excited by the QR idea and is now calling for all staff that think they could use this technology in their work to get in touch with him to discuss their ideas further.

“If you think this idea could be used in your business area or a project you’re involved in, we’d love to hear from you”, says Anand. “And keep the ideas coming!”

“Small ideas can lead to great things happening in other directions” says Mark. ‘No idea is too small, or not worthy.” The QR idea has prompted the Innovation team to invite Vodafone in next week to present us with some other mobile marketing initiatives.
