One of the things you need to do to become a successful NL Hold'em poker player is learn how to bet. Sounds easy right? Everybody has heard that you should bet more than check and raise more than call, etc etc. But, too often players will bet without having a reason for betting. There should be a reaction that you hope to get from your opponent(s) by betting and your betting should convey something to them, be it true or false. If your bets do not fall into these categories, then you are making them in the wrong places for the wrong reasons.

If there is more than 1 opponent in the pot and I'm in early position, I don't c-bet unless I have a hand. This rule sounds predictable but it rarely causes a problem. If I played against the same group of people on a regular basis, I would mix it up occasionally. But for the average poker player, this is just fine.

Understanding the purposes of the c-bet will help you become a better bettor in general. There are three different purposes of c-betting. Two of them depend upon the situation and one exists all the time.

We touched on the idea of playing your hands aggressively in the previous point, but it's so important that it deserves a heading of its own: if you have a decent hand, then bet out on it. Playing against fish requires you to be patient, so it may well be that you've folded a lot of hands before you get dealt something decent. When that happens, make sure that they pay off.

Being in the small blind can also be beneficial to you. This is because you are almost the last person to bet pre-flop, and the first person to bet post-flop. So let's say the hand is still pre-flop. The whole table checks around to you. Here is a good opportunity to raise the pot, as well as some attention. You make a bet about the size of the pot and get a few people to call. The flop comes and it is all low cards. Now is a good time to make a large bet and steal the blinds.

In any poker tournament whether it is a live tournament or an online tournament some factors are the same. The blinds will increase at set increments. Usually click here will see more hands then in a live game therefore it is not uncommon for the blinds structure to be shorter. For example live poker tournaments will range from 15 minutes to 60 minutes blinds. When the blinds increase slowly the structure will be more geared towards skill. The shorter the blinds the more luck will be needed or you will need to be more aggressive sooner to keep from being blinded out.
