MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine might be on the other end of the planet, but South Floridians step in to assist those fleeing.
A large number of members of the Sunny Isles Jewish Community are raising funds and helping to make a huge effort for humanitarian aid.
Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital shared the following "Just last night, 1,100 people came."
Emmanuil Grinshpun She explained that more than two-million Ukrainian refugees are fleeing war-ravaged countries. A large portion of them have crossed the frontier into Moldova which is a tiny country which shares a border with Ukraine.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays said "from Moldova, this Jewish Community is actually helping to cross the border line, and possibly offering food, shelter or clothes."
Many of the humanitarian efforts are being led by Sunny Isles, South Florida.
"My mission is to gather as much American social resources as is possible to tackle the situation in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun, who assists in coordinating the humanitarian effort said, "We have a full staff on the ground to assist in organizing camps, purchase food, organize buses, and organize all the facilities."
What makes this situation more dire is the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the poorest communities around the globe. Yet, those involved in the cause say they will not let any obstacle to helping.
Grinshpun said, "When brothers and sister from Ukraine arrived, we didn't have to think about it. We just began making plans."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
"Who was in the world in World War II at the time the Nazis were in the power? How many people left their homes and said, "It's not me. It's not Jewish. Emmanuil Grinshpun It isn't my family. I'm not living in Europe." We shouldn't repeat the same mistakes that history has made. It is said "If you don't now, then when." If not me and then who?
