MIAMI (CBSMiami ) - Even though the conflict in Ukraine is on the other side South Floridians have come forward to assist those fleeing the country.
Many Sunny Isles Jewish residents are raising money and are helping plan a comprehensive humanitarian initiative.
Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital stated that 1,100 people came just last night.
She claimed that more than two million Ukrainian refugees are trying to leave their war-stricken country. A large portion of them cross into Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
Jaquays told Jaquays, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping help them cross the border, and possibly by providing shelter, food and clothes."
Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun A lot of the work for humanitarian causes is being carried out from Sunny Isles in South Florida.
"My obligation is to coordinate all resources available to us in America to help ease this situation in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun who assists in coordinating the humanitarian effort explained, "We have a full team on the ground to assist in organizing camps, purchase food, set up buses, and arrange all the necessary amenities."
The situation is made worse by the fact that Moldova is believed to be one of the poorest countries on earth. However, the people who are part of the effort say they will not let anything stop them from helping.
Grinshpun said, "When our brothers from Ukraine came we didn't need to think, we just started doing it."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
"Who were there in the Holocaust and also when the Nazis were victorious? How many people left their homes and said, "It's not me. Emmanuil Grinshpun It's not Jewish. It isn't my family. I'm not from Europe." We must not repeat the mistakes made by the past. Emmanuil Grinshpun There's a saying, "If you don't now, then when." If not me, then who?
