MIAMI (CBSMiami - Although the war in Ukraine is on the other side, South Floridians have stepped up to help those fleeing the country.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish community are fundraising and working in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.
"Just last night, 1,100 people arrived," said Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
She stated that over two million Ukrainian refugees seek refuge in a war-torn nation. A large portion of them travel through the tiny state of Moldova that borders Ukraine.
Jaquays said "from Moldova, this Jewish Community is actually helping them to cross the frontier line and maybe even offering food, shelter or clothes."
Much of the work for humanitarian causes is being done through Sunny Isles in South Florida.
"My responsibility is to bring together all resources at our disposal in America to help ease this crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun, a volunteer who helped to organize the humanitarian effort and said there was an organization on the ground in Moldova helping to organize food items and other necessities and also coordinating buses.
The situation is made worse due to the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the poorest nations on the planet. People who are part of this effort insist that they won't let anything stop them from helping.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Grinshpun stated, "When our brothers from Ukraine arrived, we didn't have to think about it. We just began to do it."
Jaquays are a perfect example of this.
