Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a frequent visitor to Moldova, emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova with top ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture, security of Jewish community and ways to combat antisemitism at all levels. The WJC group also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer declared that "The World Jewish Congress would be grateful to the Moldovan government" for its warm reception and for their dedication to keeping the Holocaust memorial alive. In talks with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer stressed the importance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism and stressed the importance of making public condemnations of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi highlighted on his own behalf the commitment of the Moldovan authorities to establishing society that is built on the principles of non-discrimination, tolerance and respect for the rights of citizens from all ethnic groups. Ulianovschi also thanked Singer for the WJC's constructive collaboration with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also noted that in 2016, Chisinau's parliament had in 2016 Chisinau parliament accepted the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies that was chaired and supervising by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The two discussed possibility of restitution and the economic potential of Jewish property in Moldova. https://www.businessinsider.com/south-florida-locals-raising-money-ukrainian-refugees-moldova-2022-3 Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries the minister indicated his willingness to help in the beginning with a pilot project of 10 sites in the country.

Singer and WJC representatives met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers on Holocaust education. Discussions also included discussions about the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, preserving and protecting monuments to honour Holocaust victims, as well as the proper care of Jewish cemetery sites. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc for her work in the field of education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in maintaining a productive and ongoing collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also had a meeting with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship with the Jewish community in Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

In his trip, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova and discussed important issues involving religious practice and services offered in Moldova, and focusing on ways to further improve Jewish daily life in all aspects.
