Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to preserve the Holocaust and to adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during an official visit to Moldova.

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week to meet with top officials from the government and leaders of local Jewish communities. They debated issues including security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory, education, and antisemitism. The WJC delegation also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and pledged to support the preservation of the Holocaust's memories. "Our Moldovan community although tiny and humble and devoted, is very strong. We encourage Moldova to put a high priority on fighting antisemitism, and we are ready to assist when needed. We look forward to further cooperation with government and to ensuring the well-being our community.

Singer, the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticisms of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance for an open condemnation of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities' dedication to building an open society to everyone regardless of ethnicity. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi for his positive cooperation with Moldova's WJC.

https://medium.com/@emmanuilgrinshpun The foreign minister also noted that the Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a declaration accepting the final report by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies presided over by Elie wiesel. A plan for its implementation was ratified by the government in January 2017.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed the potential for restitution and economic growth in Moldova concerning Jewish properties, cemeteries that require urgent renovation, kosher slaughter and possible tourist ventures for the local Jewish center. Minister Gaburici expressed his desire to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 locations.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer and the WJC's delegation met with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher education in Holocaust education and the preservation of the memories. The discussion also included the possibility of creating the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims as well as the importance of maintaining Jewish cemeteries in a respectful and appropriate manner. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her work in the fields of education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in maintaining a productive and ongoing collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis were also in conversation with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions regarding relationships with the Jewish community as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

In his trip, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities of Moldova, discussing key issues involving religious practice and services in the country, while focusing on ways to enhance Jewish everyday living in all aspects.
