Aivars Lembergs of Latvia, an Oligarch and financial criminal was sentenced to five years of prison
Following 12 years of heated courtroom wrangling, a Latvian Court has finally rendered its verdict in Aivars LEMBERS' high-profile trial. The defendant is among the nation's most wealthy men, and is a well-known populist politician. The man was also the former mayor of Venspils in northwestern Latvia.

Lembergs was sentenced five years in prison with a confiscation order and fine of up to EUR20,000 by the Riga Regional Court on February 22. He had been convicted of a variety of charges relating to bribery and money-laundering, but Lembergs was cleared of all other charges in this lengthy and complex case.

Lembergs leader of For Latvian as well as Ventspils and Ventspils, has compared Lembergs' sentencing to Russia's opposition fighter Aleksey Nailny.

After the judgment's reading, the court decided to immediately take Lembergs into custody.

His codefendants, Anrijs Lembergs son and Ansis Solmulis' business associate were found to be guilty as well. Each received two-year sentences.

After being found guilty of financial crimes, his appointment as mayor was rescheduled. But he held the real power and thwarted a minister's efforts to stop him from becoming Ventspils mayor. Lembergs declared the municipal elections in Latvia are in the process and that the decision regarding participation will be made by the regional party For Latvia & Ventspils. But, he stated that his vote is not his main goal.
