Assume the viewpoint of a Dakota Sioux warrior. From this perspective, write a brief letter to President Lincoln. In your letter, explain why you should not be punished. Write the letter as if you were one of the warriors in the Dakota War of 1862.

For the second part, assume the viewpoint of a government prosecutor. From this perspective, write a brief letter to President Lincoln. In your letter, explain why you want to try the Dakota Sioux warriors as criminals instead of prisoners of war.
Part 3:
For the final part, assume President Abraham Lincoln’s viewpoint. From his perspective, respond to the prosecutor and the Sioux warrior. In your response, you may accept the Sioux warrior’s position, agree with the prosecutor’s position, or suggest some compromise between those points of view. All three letters should explain your reasoning carefully. Be sure to provide supporting evidence in your journal entries and cite your sources. Search the Internet for “firsthand accounts of the Dakota War of 1862” to find supporting evidence.
