GlyphosateThe reason farmers decide to cultivate organically using glyphosate To ensure our food supply for many years to come.
It is not surprising that the population of the world is increasing. In 2050, we're predicted to reach 9.7 billion people around the world, which is more than two billion more than today.1 Unfortunately, the land that can be used for farming isn't expanding with our population. This poses some serious challenges for farmers who must produce sufficient high-quality food for Canadians and the rest of the world.

Canada is the fifth largest exporter.2 Canadian farmers play a vital role in providing food to all. They will face greater demands than ever and will also have to control pests, diseases and weather fluctuations to ensure that their land is productive and healthy for the next generation.

In order to provide for the increasing number of people, farmers will require 70 percent more food in 2050. * Source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Farmers aren't able to meet this growing demand on their own. グリホサート Luckily, modern tools and technology that include herbicides such as glyphosate, can help farmers manage weeds precisely and efficiently, leading to an improved sustainability and security of food supply.

グリホサート efsa What is glyphosate exactly?

Glyphosate is used for over 40 years by farmers, land managers as well as gardeners all over the world. It works by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that the plants (in this case, undesirable plants) require to develop. グリホサート The enzymes do not exist in humans, or in other animals.4 So, glyphosate poses no danger to any species in the event that it is used correctly.

Glyphosate has many other uses that go beyond agriculture. It is used in municipalities to guard wildlife and the public from harmful weeds.6 Additionally, it is used to prevent burning and ensure accessibility on railway tracks.

Recently, the spotlight has been on glyphosate, its use in our modern lives and how it's utilized. グリホサート While it's important to question what's in our food, it's important to note that more than 160 government health regulatory agencies which includes Health Canada, agree that glyphosate is safe for human consumption when employed correctly.8

Canadians could be assisted to better understand glyphosate, its uses, and the importance it plays in food production as well as sustainable agricultural practices. It can help reduce the stigma associated with this tool that is among many tools used by farmers to ensure that everybody has access to safe, affordable and easily accessible food.

What is the reason to use glyphosate for agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment. It is crucial to effective controlling weeds, as well as ensuring a reliable food supply, and sustainability for the environment. Let's examine each of these benefits in more in depth.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Global farmers can lose between 30-40% and 50% of their crops to pests, weeds, and diseases. It's a tragic loss especially for farmers, when you consider that the crops are their main source of income.

It's no surprise that farmers rely on their reliable equipment every year. Glyphosate can be a useful tool to control destructive weeds in fields, especially when they're resistant to glyphosate.

Crops against. Weeds: the battle of their life

Glyphosate gives the crops a fighting chance.

Canadians and consumers worldwide, reap the benefits of plentiful and cheap food options.

This is leading to a greater risk of the risk of food insecurity. If modern farming techniques are not implemented and the use of glyphosate Canadians could expect to pay 55% more for food.11

The foods we love would be more difficult to find. The good news is that farmers can continue to grow our favourite staple food items due to the science of breeding plants.

Glyphosate does more than just act as an herbicide. It is also a way to keep the cost of produce low at the grocery store. Glyphosate is also helpful to farmers in the care of the land that Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle Saskatchewan farmer, refers to as "their most valuable asset" the land they own.

We love eating at tables.

Farmers can thrive by using crop protection tools, such as glyphosate to protect crops from pests and diseases.

42% more grains are similar to wheat and corn

72% more fruits

83 percent more potatoes and other vegetables12

The benefits are evident. But is glyphosate safe to use?

Simply said, yes. As with all pesticides should be used according the label instructions. Canada has two regulatory bodies that regulate glyphosate. One is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which examines the crops to see if there is any residue of pesticides. and the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) which provides the regulatory guidelines, product evaluations and approvals (or refusals) and is the one with the most extensive evaluation processes throughout the world.

In addition, while regulators ensure farmers use approved herbicides properly, manufacturers and farmers also contribute to making sure that glyphosate is applied in a safe and appropriate manner to ensure there is no risk of harm to the environment, animals or human.

A combination of technology improvements and precision agriculture allows farmers to use data to create precise applications for glyphosate. This includes how much and where to apply it.

Concerning the residue of pesticides, it's very rare for glyphosate residue to be detected on food and, in the case of limits, to cause harm. CFIA makes sure that farmers are using herbicides properly and complying with established limits for residues16. It is uncommon to find glyphosate in food items at low levels which is far beneath the Canadian Government's limit.17 Since it does not cause any harm to humans or animals18.

Glyphosate is used in sustainable farming practices.

https://www.env.go.jp/water/dojo/noyaku/odaku_kijun/rv/gurihosato.pdf Glyphosate is used by farmers as part of integrated pest and weed management methods. This means they are using more than herbicides in order to control weeds. Glyphosate helped farmers adopt no-till and conservation practices which provide long-term benefits to the soil, environment as well as the air quality.

- Reduction or elimination of plowing/tilling land

- Cut CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon in the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing water flow and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulator around the globe currently assesses the glyphosate a cancer threat to humans at the present levels to which they're exposed." - Health Canada, January 11, 2019.

Making sure Canadian farmers are equipped with the technology, tools and support they need to meet the ever-growing demand for food supplies of an increasing population is more crucial than ever before.

Good agricultural, food safety, and pest management methods will help farmers will continue to safeguard the food we eat. Glyphosate is only one of the many tools they will use in order to make sure that Canadians and other people across the globe have access to nutritious and affordable food now and in the future.
