Tanaman ini dikonsumsi meluas di amerika utara tapi tidak dengan dicina dimana hanya batangnya sajalah yang dimakan sebagai sayur. Padi ini mulai hilang dari habitat aslinya karena pencemaran lingkungan. namun kemudian para ahli membawa tanaman ini ke dalam hutan di new zealand yang kemudian dianggap sebagai tanaman invasif.
