AFRICA
SOUTHERN AFRICA

The interior of southern Africa is covered by the Southern Plateau. This is an area of grasslands suitable for crops and grazing. The Drakensburg Mountains run along the edge of the plateau between it and the coast in the south and west. The Namib Desert runs along the southwest coast across the Tropic of Capricorn. Inland, in the center of the ring of coastal mountains, is the Kalahari Desert. The Cape of Good Hope is a point of land that marks the continent's southwest corner.

The area of the modern nation of Zimbabwe was home to a kingdom of the Shona people around A.D. 1000. The ruins of their main city still stand. It was built of huge granite slabs fitted together without mortar. The word zimbabwe means house of stone in the Shona language. This city was the capital of several kingdoms. These kingdoms controlled the supply of slaves, ivory, gold, copper, and other African goods that were traded for Chinese and Indian goods through the east coast city-states. The city was abandoned about 1830, when the last of these kingdoms was conquered by neighboring people.

It was in southern Africa that the famous missionary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, worked in the 1850s. He mapped and explored the Zambezi River. He spent 15 years of his life in southeast Africa. He taught the gospel, opposed the slave trade, and tried to find profitable crops or businesses for the African people.
