If you've been thinking about how you can play Minecraft with your gaming buddies who own an Apple TV, it's time to start getting excited. "Realms" is Minecraft's subscription-based multiplayer, is now added to the Apple TV version. MINECRAFT PACKS updated version also features Xbox Live authentication support, which will let players access their avatars linked to them and skins for their characters.
Realms accounts are similar to purchasing the Minecraft server. However the account is managed by Microsoft and you don't need to worry about hosting or IP addresses. You have full control over who can access your private Minecraft Realm. So you don't have to worry about someone destroying your world as you race around fighting the exploding Creepers, or making amazing recreations of King's Landing from Game of Thrones. For $3.99 and $7.99 respectively, you can create a Realm with two or 10 players.
Users of existing Realms subscriptions for Mac, Linux, or PC will not be allowed to play with their iOS and Apple TV brethren. There are two Realms systems that are designed for PCs: one for Macs, and one that is compatible with iOS and Android users. We've asked whether there is a plan to connect the two systems.
The procedurally-generated worlds of Minecraft deserve to be explored with others; now Apple TV and iOS fans have a chance to do just that... as long as they stick to their own platform.
