A tonal language, there is not one, but several Chinese languages (the most well-known being Mandarin and Cantonese) which together have more than 1.3 billion speakers. These languages are official in China, Taiwan and Singapore. Among these languages, Mandarin, spoken in North and North-east China, is the most spoken language in the world, with around 850 million speakers.
One of the commonalities of these languages is the placement of the tone. In fact, it is in tonal languages where the pronunciation of syllables is subjected to a tone or a melody.
