The Deary Sisters Scholarship was established in 1992 by Harry Johnson in honor of his wife Norma, and her three sisters – Mary Jo, Peggy and Marita – all of whom graduated from the WSC College of Pharmacy between 1948 and 1955. Rusty and Sheri grew up in Southern California and got married in their teens. In the early 1980s, the couple moved to Washington State, ending up in the Tri-Cities first, then eventually Pullman, where their original desire was to attend veterinary college. Instead, both found success and purpose at the WSU College of Pharmacy, with Rusty graduating in 1987 and Sheri graduating a year later in 1988, due to the birth of their first daughter. The Carolyn Backstrom Scholarship Fund was set up in 2001 by Carolyn Backstrom, a 1934 pharmacy graduate who worked in pharmacy until retiring in 1977.
