Is Chuck-A-Luck a Performance Enhancer? A Meta-analysis

The results for the correlation between Chuck-A-Lucky task success and winning are therefore weak. It is therefore not possible to show that people are luckier when they are given a task context.

Finally, we ran a main affect to determine if the slopes between wealth distributions and health changed in the Chuck-A-Lucky versus the placebo conditions. For this purpose, we repeated all the questionnaire items from the first to the fourth blocks in the original set of questionnaires (one per condition), resulting in a total of eleven such questionnaires. Again, there were significant differences in the slopes of the wealth-health relationships for men and women. But, there were significant interactions between the two variables for both men and women, with the wealth effect being more pronounced for women (d = -.12, p =.01). While there is not strong evidence to suggest that Chuck-A-Luck increases good fortune, it does highlight the possible association between task context and greater likelihood of positive results.

A chisquare distribution can be used to examine the link between Chuck-A Luck, wealth and health. Here, we compared each participant's mean log-transformed intercepts. We then performed an analysis using the Chi-square distribution. One contingency variable was used to indicate whether the participant fell in either the extreme left quadrant or the middle of the distribution. This variable represents the ideal value at the time. The number of pairs of intercepts used in this analysis was the same. However, the degrees of chi squared prior to comparison were different across the 11 questionnaires.

The results showed a significant main effect of Chuck-A-Lucky on the slope of the logistic regression slope for the logistic outcome. The probability that a participant will fall in the extreme right quadrant increases significantly (p =.01), which indicates that Chuck-A Luck results in better outcomes than mere chance. You could also use a graphical expectancy method to see if the probability of participants falling into the extreme left quadrant is dependent on their task conditions. Again, using logistic regression, there was a significant main effect of Chuck-A-Lucky on the probability that a participant would fall into the extreme left quadrant of the distribution (a quadratic function with a negative slope), again indicating that Chuck-A Luck improves task performance. Further analysis revealed that Chuck-A-Lucky had a significant effect on the slope distribution for the chi square intercept. This indicates that Chuck-A-Lucky improves task execution when the task can be difficult. Luck improves when the task becomes easy.
