Get past the initial fear of rejection. Here's a story from my own life (and the life of many of my friends): in 2006, I went on one of my first dates. The guy I was dating, a former high school classmate, actually thought that we should go to dinner first, so we could go around the table and introduce ourselves. I was terrified, as was he, and we got into his mother's minivan (my first date, get it?) to drive to dinner (I really cannot remember what we talked about). On our way, I laughed nervously at my reflection in the window. This same guy later told me he was shocked to hear from me again only a year later. You'll never make money off of rejection. Rejection is going to happen. Act like a grownup about it and move on.

Determine whether this is the person you want to spend your time dating, or if there's a better candidate out there. This is what I wish people would have told me when I was younger.
Remember that you aren't the only one who is nervous. If you're going to be out in public, make sure your appearance is polished and stylish. But your physical appearance should only be one small part of your attractiveness.
Don't be afraid to be yourself. Whether you are introverted or outgoing, if you are shy or social, confident or self-conscious, enjoy yourself. You are the only one who knows your best.
If you happen to be with a couple, it's ok to enjoy each other's company. If you like someone's company, be sure to share that with them. Yes, you can enjoy a date even if you are with a friend.
Make eye contact with the person you are with, even if they are the only one in the room. Keep conversation going, and don't try to be too discreet. Make sure you're looking people in the eye, as it makes you seem more approachable.
Make sure you get along with your partner. If you feel like you can't afford to play the field because you want to find a long-term partner, make sure that you and your date
