We spoke with dating and relationship experts who gave us the basics to help you learn what it means to date in the modern world, and to also get it on like a modern man.
What Does It Mean to Date in 2018?
There are many ways to define dating and the dating world. There's the classic definition: It's a casual, uncommitted arrangement where one partner expresses interest in one another, and then they take it from there. Or there's the modern definition: It's much more of a committed relationship where people are ready to get to know one another as people, find out what they like and don't like, and figure out what will work for them.
When you break it down, however, there are definite trends across the board. There's an increase in casual relationships and the "pick-up artist" community, while there are fewer long-term relationships and engagements. There's also a rise in the number of college kids and young adults who are openly exploring their sexuality, and a decline in LGBTQ and interracial couples.
"What you're seeing is a rise in the importance of looking good," said Michael Arndt, a therapist and dating coach in Los Angeles. "As soon as you begin to date someone, men focus very strongly on how they're looking. https://notes.io/qtGme It's a huge concern."
The focus is so strong that some people spend thousands of dollars every year on the latest fashions, cosmetic procedures, and treatments. Fashion designer, retailer, and socialite Blair Westin says her look is a basic no-nonsense, good-fitting pair of jeans that go with her T-shirts and sneakers. She opts for comfort over trend.
"I have no interest in trying to be hip or different for a man," she said. "I am very much my own person, which is probably why I've been able to do so well in this industry."
What's more, the more comfortable you feel in your own skin, the more natural you will appear to the people you're talking to, said Mark S. King Jr., a dating and relationship therapist in Hoboken. That, in turn, will make you more comfortable in your own skin, which will make you more attractive to the opposite sex.
