Massage - Not just for the Gym
Shiatsu, a form of traditional Japanese bodywork that is not based on traditional Chinese medicine and the concept of the "yin/yang", is an alternative to traditional Japanese massage. Shiatsu, also known as the therapy for Five Elements or anma, is a Japanese massage tradition. This massage technique relies on finger pressure and manipulation of the fingers, elbows and wrists to promote healing and relaxation.

A barefoot massage has also become increasingly popular as an alternative therapy to relieve pain and improve posture. Barefoot therapists say that by applying slight pressure with their bare feet they are able to penetrate all the way down to the fascia or underlying connective tissue of the body. The barefoot therapist can release adhesions that hold parts of the body together. This massage can improve circulation, reduce stress, and relieve stiffness. Many barefoot therapists claim that they can also help heal the nervous system due to the direct contact with the nerve endings.

Another variation on the atsu is the "atsu kurabai", which literally means "fingerpressure" or "fingerbrush method." This version of the ashiatsu massage uses the fingertips to apply pressure to certain areas. This massage is often called a "developmental" massage because it targets a specific muscle group and treats the whole body simultaneously. (The kurabai is also sometimes referred to as a "sitting massage.")

Although these are the most common styles, spas can develop their own. Some spas specialize in Swedish techniques, which are long, gentle strokes that stimulate the muscles. Others work with shiatsu, an Asian method of energy flow therapy that utilizes pressure on specific points along the meridian points of the body to unblock chakras and release blockages. Many massage styles can be combined to create a therapeutic treatment.

This traditional form of massage is gaining popularity. So too have the schools and therapists who provide it. One of the most popular forms is called shiatsu. Shiatsu therapists use pressure points to manipulate the body the same way as a qualified acupuncturist. However, the key difference between the two is that the acupuncturist uses their hands to apply pressure to certain points. A shiatsu therapist applies shiatsu massage directly to the tissues. Good therapists will know when to apply pressure, and when to not. This is why they should be able to perform the Shiatsu massage.

Swedish massage is another type. This massage uses the hands of the massage therapist to release tight muscles and allow blood to flow freely throughout the body. This allows muscles to relax and become more flexible. Swedish massages are popular among athletes and other individuals who may benefit from improved circulation.

A very different type of therapeutic massage is called barefoot massage. Barefoot massage is done in hot rooms or saunas, as well as in private homes and spas. This massage is very popular with those who are new to the practice of massage and have never practiced it in a formal setting before. The idea behind barefoot massage is that since the practitioner's fingers do not touch the surface of the patient's body, there is less risk of rubbing up against sensitive skin. This massage is also much more relaxing for the patient, as the practitioner doesn't have to worry about applying lotion or wiping off the mess.

One final type of massage that is commonly performed in various types of health centers and spas is ashiatsu. Ashiatsu, also known by acupressure, refers to the practice of applying pressure at specific acupoints to relieve tension and relax muscles. Many believe that ashiatsu is an art and a relaxing, sensual form of massage. There are many forms of ashiatsu, but Shiatsu is the most well-known. Shiatsu originated in Japan and is similar to acupressure, except that its goal is to heal the body through massage rather than just pain relief.
