Are you planning a trip away from your home? You should make sure to have the necessary digital devices you require before the WiFi stops working.
Let me share with you a trip I took last year aboard a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip through the ice and back with Polar bears and other wildlife. There would be ice wherever eyes could look and snow all around. Man-made machines would fight the elements to break through the frozen north. It sounded like a huge project, a massive fight with the weather and the pole.

I was told to take with me all the technological equipment I could squeeze into my suitcases. I did bring my laptop and added an enormous display screen to increase the working space. I was told that electricity wasn't a problem. I was not aware of the things that were about to happen. I didn't realize that I'd lose my internet connection two days into my 14 day trip and then disappear completely from Earth for the next ten days. When it finally happened, I was simply shocked. No trip should, however complicated or remote, result in me to be disconnected from the world of technology. There was no doubt that there was some unfinished business that I had to resolve in the week that followed, but I also did not plan for the time off.

Nowadays, no one really cares about being forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere. If your home internet connection is experiencing intermittent problems, you can always go to a nearby McDonalds and make use of their complimentary WiFi connection to access the information you need. You could even take your laptop to Starbucks and set up a table at the counter and surf the Internet until you're done. But no cafe or restaurant can help out there, in the north, a long way from the nearest shack that has the electricity generated by a weak generator.. There's no free Internet. There are two options: either choose to go offline, or opt for satellite access.


I cannot afford a sat phone, it is too expensive, especially to use for Internet access. But, I'm planning to create a massive audio and video library for the upcoming time, before venturing to the far reaches of the world without Internet access. Last time I had 2 songs that were both mockingly downloaded back in the day the only thing I was able to listen to was three jazzy songs, and a song that I didn't even know the name. It's that simple. 4 tunes for two weeks of nothingness. I would have prepared myself for this had I known. I would have filled my laptop with movies, TV shows, as well as music videos. I could spend hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's easy to download them, convert them to MP3 and save to my personal computer. I then lay in my bedroom listening to the podcasts that I like, but don't always have the time to listen. This would be my "golden hour" or two weeks worth of gold. Instead it was two weeks of watching the ceiling and trying to find passengers every when there's a sound in the corridors.

The boat was forced to be turned around and return to civilization. It was not surprising but it did mean that endless hours of unproductive time could have been used to listen to podcasts or look at DIY videos on home repairs, as as simply listening to music. The next time I'll convert YouTube videos to MP4 and MP3 on my laptop. Music can lift spirits So don't get discouraged. Be aware that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download movies and shows on your computer to watch offline. Also, these can be used on long trips to the Arctic. Don't give up hope. Good luck!
