Silicon Valley is betting that this dystopian sci-fi concept will become real.



Fortnite is trying to be more than a videogame. This is the latest example of Fortnite adding experiences to its gameplay. It featured performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and three movies by Christopher Nolan last year.



Although the initial idea behind the metaverse was that it would be used in dystopian science-fiction novels where virtual worlds offer an escape from crumbling societies and were intended for fictional characters, the tech industry has painted a more positive image of the concept. The idea is to create a space similar to the internet, but one that users (via digital avatars) can walk around inside of and where they can interact with one another in real-time.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was very proud to present Fortnite as a metaverse event and as a "social event" when he was a witness in the prominent lawsuit against Apple that he filed earlier this year. The suit was filed over the commissions that the iPhone maker collects from developers of apps. Sweeney's arguments were meant to prove that Fortnite is more than just a game. It also shattered Apple's claims that Fortnite is not a monopoly, as Fortnite users can play it on other devices than iPhones or iPads.



Epic, on the contrary attempted to present itself as one of the millions of apps available in Apple's App store that are subject to draconian restrictions and commissions for in-app purchases. (A verdict in the case is still waiting to be decided.)

Fortnite isn't the only well-known game that is heavily influenced by the concept of metaverse.



One of the most notable examples is Roblox, which features games-within-a-game that are created by users. It has also branched out into TV shows and concerts in recent months. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft (MSFT), has also worked on expanding its own metaverse, with the group Reporters Without Borders recently creating a virtual library inside the game that contains articles that have been banned across the globe.

Big Tech is also increasingly adopting the metaverse, as the word appearing nearly two dozen times during Facebook's latest earnings call. As it seeks to go beyond the traditional video call the social media company has been making use of virtual reality capabilities and services for quite a while.



A fully-fledged metaverse is likely to be a few years away due to a variety of reasons but the gaming industry is currently the leading force in the field.
