How Hard Is It For Someone New To Get Into Runescape
There's a hell lotta things that are obvious to RS veterans but might not be to you. A very good guide to all things about the game is runescape.wikia.com. It has pages about items, non-player characters, monsters, quest guides, skill guides, slang dictionary, and much more.

Now, in no particular order...

The two most important quantifiable "objects" in the game are experience points in skills ("xp") and coins ("gp" = gold pieces).

"k" = thousand (kilo), "m" = million, "b" = billion, are used to shorten numbers, for example 1.5k xp or 23m gp. When the value is greater than 1000 and it can be understood from context what the speaker is referring to, the "gp" or "xp" is often omitted, for example "100k til level 90 fishing" (obviously it's xp), or "Dragon platelegs cost 300k" (obviously it's coins).

Skills in the game are informally divided by players into two main groups: "buyables" and "nonbuyables". When supplies needed to train the skill can be bought, the skill is called a buyable. Examples include cooking, fletching, construction, among others. runescape wiki With such skills you can determine a gp/xp rate for every training method (i.e. how many coins it costs to get 1xp). Nonbuyables are skills requiring more focus and direct interaction, as the xp in them cannot be "bought". Examples include agility, thieving, among others. There are also skills that can't be placed in either group (for example summoning, being only partially buyable).

The highest possible level ("lvl") in a skill is 99 (With a notable exception of Dungeoneering and Invention, which extend to level 120. Only these two skills do so).

There are three combat styles in RuneScape: Melee, Ranged, Magic. They follow the so-called "combat triangle":

Melee has an advantage in combat over Ranged,

Ranged has an advantage in combat over Magic,

Magic has an advantage in combat over Melee.

What it translates to is that for example a ranger is best protected against magic attacks, averagely protected against ranged attacks, and his weakness are melee attacks (Analogous for other two styles). This is both visible in PvP combat (player versus player) and PvM combat (player versus monsters). Thus, when you plan to fight some monsters that attack with melee, it's usually best to fight them with magic.

Within each of the 3 main classes you can find attack styles. Melee attacks can be either slash, stab or crush. Ranged styles are arrows, bolts, and thrown. Magic attack styles are air, earth, water, and fire. Styles are associated with the weapon you're using (or, for magic, with the spell you're casting). When fighting, players usually follow the general weakness of their opponent. For example, when fighting a monster weak to slash, you'll be okay using any melee style, but using exactly a slash weapon will be the most efficient method (the best accuracy).

Some weapons are for one hand only (main-hand) and you can use a shield with them. Some weapons are two-handed ("2h"). Some weapons can be dual-wielded - it means they have an equivalent that can be held in the left hand instead of a shield, for maximum damage: main-hand (2/3 damage) + off-hand (1/3 damage) sum up to damage of a 2h weapon.

"f2p" = "free to play", "p2p" = "pay to play" (members)

Every game world is identical and you can freely choose which one you want to play on (of course the members worlds can only be accessed by members). A large part of the world map can be accessed by members only, and can be done only on members worlds.

Coins in money pouch and items in bank are safe in all situations.

When you die in normal circumstances, you keep 3 items and the rest is placed in a grave on the spot where you died. Then you have two options: buy back all your stuff from a guy called Death (there's a small coin fee for item reclaim) or run back to your grave. However, you have a very short time if you want to run back where you died and retrieve your stuff for free. If you don't make it in time, Death still has your items (for 24 hours).

Generally, items that you drop will remain visible only to you for 1 minute, then they'll be visible to everyone for 2 more minutes, and then they vanish forever, so be careful what you drop. Never drop anything valuable!

The Wilderness is a large dangerous area where players can attack each other (north-eastern part of the continent, north of the large town Varrock and village Edgeville). It's separated from the safe area by a ditch. When killed by another player in the Wilderness, you lose all your items, so I'd advise against going there in any near future.

You can right-click the run icon (near minimap) and rest. This restores run energy faster than usual, but you cannot rest in combat, or while skilling.

The best place to sell items to is the Grand Exchange (GE). It's very convenient and eliminated most of the direct player-to-player trading. The worlds where players trade with each other still ("street trading") are w2/w3 (usually in the area of the GE in Varrock).

All items stack in the bank (if you have multiple of the same item they will occupy one slot with a number of them displayed). However, not all items stack in inventory (backpack). For example, runes stack but ores don't. You can use the "note" button in the bank interface to withdraw nonstackable items in a form of a certificate, which stacks. This allows you to carry large quantities of items, for example from the bank to the Grand Exchange.

It's a good idea to subscribe (buy membership) once you do all free quests and train your skills a bit, among them getting lvl 50 in all combat stats would be very beneficial. (The strongest armours/weapons for free players have lvl 50 requirements in associated skills: rune (melee), blue dragonhide (ranged), mystic (magic) ). One of good places to explore before subscribing is also the Stronghold of Security - be careful, it's full of monsters).

If you see players saying some weird 2/3/4-letter "words", it's usually an abbreviation for something. Look it up on RS wiki.

Press mouse wheel to rotate camera, arrow keys are a waste of time. Also rolling the mouse wheel controls the zoom.

Interfaces can be customised in many ways. Keybinds too. Experiment with them!

Don't be offended if someone calls you a noob ("lol" and "noob" are the two most-used expressions in the game, probably). Don't believe in most things that players offer you; if something is too good to be true, it probably is a scam or a lure! Don't hesitate to ask players about RuneScape-related things. Still, it's good to cross-check some facts with RS wiki anyway (it's rarely wrong). Ignore rude players, socialise with the nice folks.
