Randy notices his post-Day weight loss, and we find out that Dan Gunn, who now lives with Randy, has developed a barter system as a method of payment for his medical services. This is valuable because Dan can now get gas for the car, the only method of transportation for the people on River Road. Helen then informs Randy of the Henrys’ missing chickens, which are a vital source of food. Randy and Dan go to town, looking for someone to trade for coffee, and discuss the radiation that has affected Porky Logan, the local state representative, among others. Randy and Dan visit Rita Hernandez, Randy’s ex-girlfriend, whose brother is sick with radiation poisoning. They discover the poisoning is due to radiation- contaminated jewellery traded to people by Porky Logan, who is dead, due to the contamination. Porky Logan is buried along with the radioactive jewellery. Randy is then given authority under martial law, via a radio announcement. Helen, delusionally thinking Randy is Mark, tries to kiss him, and causes temporary tension between her and Randy. Dan eventually returns from a trip to town, beaten and bruised. It is then revealed to be the work of the highwaymen, who also took Dan’s doctor bag and the car.
