The Thanatos instincts include death and destruction. Freud believed that everyone has a Thanatos drive that they have to try to control throughout their lives. The Thanatos instinct can be directed outward toward others, or inward toward oneself. A Thanatos drive outward can include aggression or risky behavior. If someone directs the Thanatos drive inward, it may result in self-harm or suicide. Freud based the theory on his clinical observations of his psychiatric patients.
The conscious mind consists of every thought, perception, feeling, memory, hope, or dream that you're aware of at any given time. It describes what you’re actively thinking at the moment. The conscious can pull information from your preconscious to interpret what you’re seeing, hearing, or thinking about.
The preconscious mind contains anything that could ever possibly be brought into the conscious mind. It includes your memories and any stored knowledge that you can choose to recall. The preconscious drives your behavior and personality. It’s a level that can be “searched” if you think about your stored knowledge.
The unconscious mind is anything that you feel, think, remember, or want to do that’s outside of your conscious awareness. This could be repressed memories, unpleasant feelings, fears, irrational wishes, or early traumatic experiences. The unconscious stays hidden until it’s brought up through counseling or a traumatic experience.
When you look at a painting, you see the colors, shapes, and textures. That's your conscious mind.
You may recall seeing the painting before. Or, you might think of another painting by the same artist, or a painting in a similar style. That's your preconscious mind.
The emotion contained in the painting might bring up a memory from your childhood, or make you think about an event that you'd repressed. That's your unconscious mind
