2K Relents To Fans, Turns Servers Back On For Abandoned Online "4v1" Game

Online-only Evolve receives a second lease on life complete with matchmaking

Evolve, an online four-on-1 shooter, is the exception to the rule. In fact, Evolve's case, the reverse was true. And in a surprising twist of events, Turtle Rock-published and Turtle Rock-developed game has been given a lot more life this week than it had in the four years since it was discontinued.

Before I begin, I want to make the worst news clear. The previously free-to play game is now virtually impossible to access if the owner or claimor has not previously owned it. There's also no clear path to it due to the game being removed from online retailers in September 2018. WEBARCHIVE It's possible that working download keys to the game's free, or F2P, version are still available.



2K Games clarified that it would continue support Legacy Evolve, an older version which has fewer characters and more options through a barebones peer to peer (P2P), matchmaking platform built into the game. This support and custom lobby options allow fans of the original game on PC and console to continue playing the game they didn't like when it launched in 2015.



Fans noticed something a few weeks later: The final official version of the game, better known as Evolve stage 2, appeared to be working again on PC. Perhaps its switch had been flipped as far back as June 8; 2K Games never made an announcement about the Legacy Evolve server being turned back on, and the game's official support page has been dormant for nearly four years. Ars Technica reached out for comment from 2K Games, but they didn't respond immediately. Evolve Stage 2’s built-in P2P matching system on PC is operational again. It supports some, but certainly not all, the "progression” systems that were added in 2016 when the game received its F2P patches. One of the most hilarious responses to the news was made by an ex-Evolve engineer who posted in a Reddit thread. He said, "Omg, it's so exciting. You can download it now.

All in-game purchases have been halted and prompts regarding official 2K servers must not be ignored or bypassed to access a barebones matchmaking queue. Ars Technica did re-download the 60GB version on Windows PC and confirmed that the unique "one giant versus four hunter" online combat is still functional.

Evolve Stage 2 has some lingering issues. This could have been fixed by another round or bug fixes and content updates. It's unlikely that Turtle Rock Studios' original devs and the 2K Games publishing staff will ever be able to update Evolve. Evolve will therefore remain an incomplete execution of its original promise. Evolve Stage 2 is a treasure trove of online co-op gaming history and is highly recommended for anyone who missed their chance in 2018 to get a copy. It has also been able to reach its full potential thanks to Capcom’s success in this genre.
