Minecraft Says 'No' To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the ever-popular Minecraft, is taking a page from the old U.S. anti-drugs playbook, though it seems "Just Say No" works much better for blockchain-based money making schemes than it ever did for narcotics.

The blog of the Microsoft-owned studio said Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft were "generally not something we will support and allow." It also stated that it was changing its Minecraft Usage Guides to clarify that blockchain tech would not be allowed to be integrated in the Minecraft client. Additionally, NFTs based upon in-game content (e.g skins, items, mods) cannot be used to create NFTs.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's senses of digital ownership are based on "scarcity, exclusion", which "doesn't align with Minecraft values for creative inclusion and playing together."

This was actually what happened. Blockverse, a NFT project supposedly designed for Minecraft, concocted an estimated $1.2million from early investors who purchased Blockverse characters in NFT format on sites such as OpenSeas. The project also included a cryptocurrency named $Diamond. In January, the project creators suddenly took all the money invested and deleted the project website, Discord, and Twitter account. If you don't know, this is colloquially known as a "rug pull," and it's much too common in the crypto space.

The Minecraft developers did not rule out the possibility of blockchain tech being included in the future but stated that "we have no plans to implement Blockchain technology into Minecraft right at this time."

It's likely that the news did not inspire the enthusiasm of those who were already working on integrating Minecraft into the Blockchain. NEWS FOR DUMMIES NFT Worlds, a company that uses blockchain to allow users to purchase NFTs of digital environment-mostly Minecraft-were hit hard. The company posted a Discord message via its Twitter account stating that they were working on solutions "around Minecraft EULA modifications" and that they were even contemplating pivoting to create their Minecraft-like gaming platform.

Despite the game being almost 13 years old, 141 million active players still come back to Minecraft every month, as of August 2021 numbers from Statista. In a 2019 interview, Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft studio, stated that Minecraft players were on average 24 years old. However, the game is specifically designed to be kid-friendly, Chiang said. The ERSB rating of Minecraft players is 10 and over. The client has a money-making investment program built in. This raises red flags and can lead to abuse, especially if children are involved. Chiang reportedly told Edge that "We need to be really clear and simple around how we plan to monetize in the game."

Roblox, another game geared towards kids, has embraced monetization and in-game promotions that are geared toward children. Roblux is used to incentivize users to spend Roblux in-game on items, while they visit worlds that are specifically designed to promote brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. However, the game's developer updated its community standards last summer to include a vague goal for NFTs in the game. Roblox users cannot offer to act as models for assets and are therefore not permitted to use Roblox for payment.
