The Problems With the Word Breaking News
The expression "breaking information" is now a standard part of daily life. It can be heard on television, radio or the Internet. While its use is not limited to any one medium, it can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Although it isn't the only culprit of 24-hour news merchants television and the web got drunk on breaking' on the exact same day: September 11. Three cable networks and the growing blogosphere quickly followed the story of the attacks. The result was a story filled with confusing details, rumors that seemed out of the blue, and a hot conflict in central Asia.

Radio

Some news organizations use the term 'breaking news' to describe news stories that are new or unusual. This term is also used for events that occurred many decades ago but have recently become public. However, there are problems with the term. It confuses major and minor events and refers to long-over information.

Television

There are many definitions for the term "breaking news". It was originally used to refer to something that could interrupt a television program. This expression was popular before the advent of cable news and when television news bulletins were scarce. It's used to describe something that has just occurred that makes headlines. It used to mean anything that was "breaking" at first, but it has since expanded to include rumors as well as other soft news stories that do not necessarily involve breaking news.
