Fired Browns Coach Disputes Owner's Claim Of 'discord'

Article content CLEVELAND – Hue JACKSON didn't lose his nerve.

Article content Fired this week by the Browns after winning just three of 40 games in two plus-seasons, Jackson on Friday disputed owner Jimmy Haslam's assertion there was "internal discord" on the coaching staff that made his dismissal - along with offensive co-ordinator Todd Haley's - necessary.

Fired Browns coach disputes the claim of a 'discord owner' Back to Video

Days after being let go, Jackson appeared on ESPN to defend his record, describe regrets and essentially audition for another job.

Monday's firing of four coaches in six years was Haslam's first. He said that Jackson and Haley had been involved in in-fighting, which led to his decision to make a change halfway through.

Jackson disagreed with his boss and stated that he wanted to "set things straight."

Jackson, who played 1-15, 2-15 and 0-15 for Cleveland, stated, "I don’t think it was really about internal discord." "I think that's a strong word. I think you have disagreements. With Todd, with Gregg Williams (defensive coordinator), with Amos Jones (special forces coordinator). It's not internal discord, I think. When you look at the situation, it seems like the organization made a decision that would change the direction of its operations.

Article content Jackson is aware that he didn't win nearly as many and has some doubts about how he handled it. Following a recent loss to Tampa Bay, a frustrated Jackson said he intended to "dive in" and help Haley. Jackson claimed he was only trying help, but the comments caused a rift between Haley and Jackson and sent shockwaves through the front office.

Jackson feels that Jackson had to be let go because of Baker Mayfield's rookie quarterback, who may have finally ended the franchise’s search in finding a long-term QB.

"I think when you really stop to look at it, it's truly really about Baker Mayfield," Jackson said. "I think they want him to be in the best situation possible. The first pick in the draft was a quarterback who I believe will be a superstar player. He's not playing as well. So again, here is a perfect storm to move forward and move on. And I have to respect their decision.

Article content Jackson claimed that Haley was the one who hired him, having spent the previous six seasons as a Steeler player. Jackson didn't want Jackson to relinquish his play-calling duties (he was also Cleveland’s offensive co-ordinator for his first two years), but he felt it was better if he had help.

Jackson now admits he should not "give away the offense."

"I knew Todd Haley was a skilled offensive play-caller. He was also a veteran playcaller in our division." Why would you not?" Jackson said of Haley's hiring. "I mean, let’s be honest, it was obvious that I was on the clock. You can't be 1-15 or 0-16 and think, "I know I can go through the entire season without winning football games." I wanted to surround myself with guys that have done it, and done it at a high level, and Todd Haley was definitely one of those guys.

Article content Jackson said that he felt it necessary to express his feelings publicly just days after being fired.

He stated, "I want people understanding - I'm just human as anybody else." "At final, I didn’t do enough. We didn't do enough to get the job done in Cleveland. What can I do? I'm not going into a hole and saying pull the covers."

Jackson is aware that his 11-44-1 record in head coaching doesn't make it attractive to lead a team.

He said, "I hope the next chance for me is to return and be a coordinator first and foremost." "Go back and put my name back to where it should be, among some of the best play callers in this league. Then, move on.
